Healthy Corner Store Initiative and Snackin’ FreshIncludes information about the Corner Store Campaign’s social marketing efforts in Philadelphia’s inner-city corner stores and schools, along with lesson plans, other resources, and links to related programs. Snackin’ Fresh is a social marketing initiative directed at youth. The project site includes interactive maps for each participating school and corner store showing what types of healthy snacks are offered.

Harnessing the Power of Supermarkets to Help Reverse Childhood Obesity

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and The Food Trust, April 2011. This report recommends in-store marketing strategies to promote healthier foods for grocery and corner stores. The report includes case studies and recommendations about marketing tactics, such as in-store promotions, placement and pricing that can encourage healthy eating, increase customer satisfaction, and help food retailers increase profitability. The link also includes a video about innovative marketing strategies being used to encourage healthier eating at corner stores and a new grocery store in Philadelphia. The video describes The Food Trust’s Healthy Corner Store Initiative (HCSI) in Philadelphia. It also features Snackin’ Fresh, a youth program of the HCSI that teaches middle school kids about nutrition and helps them to make healthier choices at corner stores. The video also features a grocery store that opened in a Philadelphia neighborhood previously classified as a food desert.

Impact of the Revised WIC Food Package on Small WIC Vendors: Insight from a Four-State Evaluation

March 25, 2011, Altarum Institute. This report describes findings of a study that examined the impact of the changes to the WIC food package on small, authorized WIC stores. The study included small WIC stores in Colorado, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin and found that small stores are adding healthy foods to their inventories in response to the food package changes. While findings from store manager interviews revealed some challenges in finding the new WIC foods in allowable form and in maintaining food freshness, their overall response to the new food package was very positive.
