Grist.com, September 21, 2011. Two recent MBA graduates are bringing an innovative version of the traditional corner store to Seattle’s Delridge neighborhood this fall. In an effort to provide reliable access to good food to this neighborhood that currently lacked it, the partners came up with the idea of turning reclaimed shipping containers into mini grocery stores. The containers are very portable, can be easily dropped into a parking lot, and added onto over time. The first prototype store is open now, with plans to establish more in 2012. The stores will not sell cigarettes, and will make an effort to provide fresh food and other basic grocery items.

West Central grocery keeps options healthy

The Spokesman-Review, September 8, 2011. Parkside Grocery and the Monkey Business Café is a new healthy corner store project in Spokane, Washington. The store is the second participant of Spokane Regional Health District’s Healthy Corner Store program. Parkside is the only small store in Spokane that is WIC-approved. The Spokane program is modeled after Seattle’s healthy corner store program, which now has twenty participating stores.

State still seeks winning strategy against childhood obesity

The Seattle Times, June 11, 2011. This article takes a critical look at using healthy corner stores to combat obesity in Washington. The first healthy corner store to participate in King County’s program has stopped trying to sell as much fresh produce because people were not purchasing enough, pointing to the fact that creating access is just one piece of changing eating habits. Despite this, the county believes that other healthy corner store projects have proven more successful and plans to recruit 25 new stores for participation, with $1.8 million allocated for the project.

January 11, 2010, KUOW News.This describes a healthy corner store pilot project in Seattle, a joint venture of the Delridge Neighborhood Development Association and Seattle Public Health. One store has started selling produce in the targeted neighborhood, which has few grocery stores. The store owner receives technical assistance with produce handling, and will receive a new refrigerator to enable him to stock more healthy items. His sales of fresh produce have grown rapidly.

Delridge area’s ‘food desert’ gets fruit, veggie oasis

The Seattle Times, December 5, 2009. The Delridge neighborhood in west Seattle doesn’t have any large grocery stores and many residents do not own cars. In response, the Delridge Neighborhood Development Association is organizing a corner store project funded by the Kellogg Foundation. One store owner is already stocking fresh produce and is excited to expand the selection. The group also plans to create a brand that stores can use to promote themselves as healthy stores, and to stock corner stores with local produce or to use them as Community Supported Agriculture pick-up sites.
